The Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MISANU), was founded in 1946 as the first institute of the Academy. Today, as an institutional member of the European Mathematical Society, MISANU is a unique centre for mathematically-oriented fundamental and technological research in Serbia, with more than 70 full-time researchers and over 250 part-time collaborators employed at over 40 different institutions, mostly the faculties of the Universities in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš, Kragujevac and Novi Pazar, all involved in 8 national and several international (FP7, COST, TEMPUS) projects. According to the recent ranking of the National council for scientific and technological development, MISANU is the second best research institution in Serbia.

MISANU is the publisher of the oldest and most important mathematical journal in Serbia, Publications de l'Institut Mathématique, and numerous non-periodical publications. The Library of the Institute, which specializes in the fields of mathematics, mechanics and computer sciences, with more than 60,000 issues, is the largest collection of mathematics-related books and periodicals in the region of WB. MISANU organizes 2 colloquiums and 11 permanent scientific seminars.

MISANU has a cooperation agreement with Zentralblat Math to organize the local editorial unit, and also maintains the mirroring site of the European Mathematical Society. MISANU is organizing (with the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad) a doctoral program in ICT, and (with the Serbian National Centre for the Promotion of Science) the annual “May – Month of Mathematics”, to popularize and promote mathematics in general.
